Lean Enterprise
In 1984, a group of researchers from MIT set out to study the state of the automotive industry
worldwide. Their 5 year project took them to 90 plants in 17 countries. The results documented the
reasons the Japanese were taking the lead in the international auto industry through advanced
manufacturing techniques. The MIT group defined and published these techniques, which were to
become known as Lean Manufacturing.
In the 15 years since the publication of this ground breaking study, Lean Principles have been
adapted to every type of business. The results have included significant increases in productivity,
improvements in space utilization, and drastic reduction of delivery lead times.
